Lost Banananas

Lost Bananas: Cornish bananas at Heligan

Yes, how do you stop spelling "banana"? Anyway, if the Garden is Lost, the Bananas must be as well. Yes, Virginia, these are Cornish bananas.

For those of you who don't know Cornwall well, the "Lost Gardens of Heligan" are a lovely visitor attraction. Heligan was a country house with extensive formal and informal gardens built in Victorian times which was abandoned - hence the "Lost". In the 1990's, they were rediscovered and renovated. One splendid part of the gardens is the "Jungle" valley - a sheltered valley which runs down towards the sea from the house. This is so sheltered, and the climate here so temperate, that bananas can grow and flourish outside - quite remarkable for England.

This is a picture of some Cornish bananas. How do you stop spelling "banananas"? That's a joke by Terry Pratchett.

Acrylic on canvas. 500 x 700mm.

Unmounted, £950.
