At the Cheesewring

At the Cheesewring

I'm sure the Cheesewring itself is a remarkable feature, but to me these rocks above it are the most archetypal image of the granite outcrops on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall where I live.

Given one of those cold winter days where the air is as clear as gin so the low sun strips everything but the bare colour from the live and dead grasses and exposes the rough texture of the granite; well I couldn't paint anything like it, so the photograph will have to do. This is one of my all-time favourite images.

The name "Cheesewring" is given to the feature because of its supposed similarity to a press for removing the whey from newly-made cheese - the Cheesewring itself isn't in the photograph, but the formations are similar to what you see, erosion over time creating flat, rounded plates of hard granite stacked apparently precariously on top of each other.
